Sarkozy vs Hollande, pest or plague?

My son is sure that Hollande will win the presidential election in France (the second round of voting is this Sunday) because that’s what all his friends are saying in the school playground. He is six years old.

President Sarkozy

Yesterday I asked my kinésithérapeute (physiotherapist) here in France who she thought would win. “Tell me what you think - Sarkozy or Hollande?” She scathingly muttered, “You mean, ‘pest or plague’?!” So then, neither of them are that popular here in Toulouse. In fact, nobody we have met supports Sarkozy. Where are they all? Up north?

Francois Hollande, Presidential Candidate
I am absolutely not politically minded and I don’t get the left and right business. It just doesn’t make sense to me in a mortal kind of way. If I bothered to understand it I’m sure it would be completely fascinating, but what I find interesting is the personality inter-plays, the posturing, the outrage, the grandiosity of the campaigning. Fantastic stuff especially when there’s the French elegance and style to it all. Everyone here has an opinion on the election, on the voters, on the debate on TV last night between Sarkozy and Hollande, and I love that they express it freely and vehemently. I’m impressed too that in the first round of voting over 80% of France turned out to vote. It seems quite high to me as far as percentages go - I suspect the NZ doesn’t get that high a turnout.

Anyway, on verra - we will see!
